History and Culture

Formed in 1956, Karnataka, located in the southwestern region of the country, was originally called Mysore before being renamed in 1973. Its rich history spans several powerful dynasties like the Nanda Empire, Mauryan Empire, Kadamba Dynasty and Chalukya Dynasty to name a few.

Despite becoming one of the leaders in industrial innovation in the country, Karnataka has managed to hold on to its history as witnessed by the several historical monuments and regions in the state. From the fast-paced city of Bengaluru to the sprawling hills of Kodagu, Karnataka has something for everyone.

Celebrating Heritage

Karnataka is home to a myriad of beliefs, traditions, food and art that has lived through centuries. The state has nurtured its roots-celebrating its age-old heritage and sharing it with the world to know.

Grand Festivals

The state celebrates festivals inspired by local, cultural and religious beliefs. Every festival across the state represents age-old traditions waiting to be experienced.

Vijaya Utsava

Also known as Hampi Utsava, it is a colourful affair filled with music, dance, fireworks, puppet shows and an elephant march called the Jumbo Savari. The festival is usually celebrated in the month of October or November in Hampi.

Pattadakal Dance Festival

Located 20 kilometres away from Badami in Bagalkote district, Pattadakal is known for its ancient temples. Held in January, the Dance Festival along with the very popular craft mela, celebrate the history of the region. Dancers from all over the country throng the village to be a part of the festivity.

Dasara at Mysuru

While Dasara is an important festival throughout the country, in Mysuru, it takes on a royal significance. The Mysore Palace is lit up and massive processions adorn the city’s streets.

Mahamastakabhisheka Mahotsav

Held in the Shravanabelagola own near Bengaluru, the Mahamastakabhisheka Mahotsav is celebrated once every 12 years. The 57-feet statue of Siddha
