Anchoring the master control facilities of ISRO, Hassan is acknowledged as an industrial growth centre along with six developed industrial areas and four special economic zones. Added to this, nearly 70% of the population is engaged in agriculture with a 265-acre food processing SEZ for export-oriented units established in the district. Hassan is a rich producer of spices like cardamom and also produces coconut and coffee. The presence of ZARS, KVK and other technical institutions provides knowledge support to the farmers and infrastructure for intensive R&D. This creates a unique ecosystem for the development of the sector. A 300 MT cattle feed plant further strengthens the district's investment opportunities.
Infrastructure & Resources
Land
Hassan is spread across a total area of 6,62,602 hectares. The agro-climatic conditions across its three zones - southern transitional, southern dry and central dry zones help in adopting varied cropping patterns. Land Bank Availability: 405 acres
Water
Cauvery, Hemavathi and Yagachi are three important rivers flowing in this district. Hemavathy reservoir at Gorur is the main dam. Yagachi and Vatehole are the other two small reservoirs in the district that help irrigate 20% of the net sown land.
Power
Transmission to the district is done by Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESC), Mysuru. Hassan Biomass Power Company has also set up an 8 MW renewable source biomass power project in the district, and Hassan Thermal Power (P) Ltd. (HTPL) has set up 2×660 MW imported coal-based power plant near Hassan. The district demands 177392 MU on average across domestic and district use.
Natural Resources
The district has natural resources of moulding sand, quartz, feldspar, copper ore and chromite ore deposit.
Human Resources
Some of the important institutes are Malnad College of Engineering, Rajiv Institute of Technology, GTTC Hassan and Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences.
Connectivity
Two international airports – Bengaluru & Mangaluru along with three domestic airports provide connectivity to the region. Hassan airport is under construction. It has 200 km of rail connectivity across five talukas, and two more broad-gauge rail links under progress enhancing accessibility. NH48 and NH 206 pass through the district, while the ports of Mangaluru, Karwar and Goa provide sea route access.
