Kodagu

Famous as the Switzerland of the east and the Kashmir of the south, Kodagu is the destination for leisure. The scenic landscape of Kodagu with its vast expanse of forests, plantation, and cultivations, that once were driving this primarily agro-based economy, are now adding momentum for eco-tourism in the region. Kodagu is home to plantation crops like coffee, tea, rubber, teak, areca nut, and tapioca. The region is also popular for its pepper, cardamom, and orange cultivation. The district has immense potential for investments in the tourism sector and is also home to several golf clubs.

Land

Kodagu has 28.88% of land as forest cover that accounts for 10% of the total forest area in the state. It has 21.12% uncultivable land and 14.26% remaining land. 35.74% of the land is used for cultivation.

Water

River Cauvery along with its principal tributaries Hemavathi, Lakshmana Theertha, Kakkabbe and Harangi provide water in this district. However, groundwater availability in the region is still moderate.

Power

The Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company Limited (CESCOM) supplies electricity in the region. Additionally, a hydroelectric power plant was commissioned in the year 2000 at the Harnagi Reservoir.

Natural Resources

The district has natural reserves of reddish-brown soil and yellowish-grey to greyish sandy loam available.

Human Resources

Kodagu is home to niche institutions like the College of Forestry – Ponnampet, University of Agricultural Sciences and School Of Nursing Madikeri, among others.

Connectivity

The district has easy access to three international airports and two domestic airports, and by road, it has access across State Highway 88 with 538 km of the highway running through the region. The Mangaluru (Mangalore) Karwar, Goa and Chennai seaports provide sea route access.
