Kolar

Situated in the southeastern part of Karnataka, the district comprises of five talukas including Malur and Mulbagal. Kolar ranks first in the production of horticultural crops like potato, tomato, onions and chillies. There are ample opportunities in the district to invest in mulberry cultivation. Sericulture and dairy are important industries here while there is also the presence of handloom and readymade garment clusters. Kolar is also a leader in broiler chicken production. The district also grows cash crops like coconut and cashew and is a hub for agro-based and food processing industries.

Land

Kolar has 44% of cultivable land and 5% of the total area of the district is covered by forest. 11% of the land is for non agricultural use and about 28% is uncultivated.. Major land is used for ragi cultivation in the district. Land Bank Availability: 328 acres

Water

Palar, Uttara Pinakini and Dakshina Pinakini are the rivers supplying to the district. The region is also irrigated using tube wells and wells.

The district has natural resources like limestone, laterite and dolerite.

Human Resources

GoI has plans to establish an Advanced Skill Development Centre in the district. Additionally, Kolar has several leading institutions like the Sericulture College, SDU University and Shri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College, thereby providing skilled resources for various industry specialisations.

Connectivity

Bangalore International Airport is 65 km from Kolar while Chennai International Airport is about 260 km. The Bengaluru-Chennai railway line passes through Malur and Bangarpet, and the Yelahanka-Bengarpet-KGF railway line passes through Srinivaspura-Kolar-Bangarpettown, thus providing a connection to all the major cities via rail. Additionally, NH-4 passes through the district providing access to Chennai and Pune. Sea route access is provided by the ports of Mangaluru, Karwar and Chennai.
