Raichur

Known as the Rice Bowl of India, Raichur has the only gold manufacturing unit in the country and the nation’s most efficient thermal power plant. The district is set to further its growth with a solar photovoltaic power plant and a proposed SEZ. The district also ranks first in sweet lime production in the state. Other agricultural products are brinjal, chilli and mangoes. There are over 100 rice mills in the district and 15% of its SSI units are engaged in textile-based activities. The established trading market for cotton and leather products adds impetus to the textile industries in the region.

Land

Raichur district has a total land area of 8,442 sq. km with 5.29% of uncultivated land and 2.17% of forest cover. Major land utilization is for agriculture at 63.40%, and 29.14% of the remaining area is available.

Water

Raichur has two main rivers - Krishna and Tungabhadra flowing in the district that aid in irrigation.

Power

Raichur Thermal Power Plant is the main power source for the region. Kalaburgi (Gulbarga) Electricity Supply Company Limited (GESCOM) is responsible for the power transmission to the district. The demand for power in the region averages around 120 MW for both industry and domestic use.

Natural Resources

The mineral reserves in the district include gold, copper, feldspar, granite, quartz, sandstone and limestone.

Raichur has high access to three international and two domestic airports with Hyderabad airport being the closest. Raichur is connected by rail to major cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, Bhuvaneshwar, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and New Delhi. National highway like NH 67 and several state highways across four routes connect the district via road. Raichur has access to four major seaports, including Goa which is the closest.
