Uttara Kannada

Nestled in beautiful scenic locales, Uttara Kannada is also home to one of India’s six atomic plants and a greenfield naval base project-Seabird. The coastal belt of Uttara Kannada also has one of Karnataka’s largest ports, Karwar, with a capacity of 75000 million tonnes liquid storage and 30000 MT warehousing. Government of Karnataka is keen on developing six berths under PPP here. The region also cultivates plantation crops like areca nut, coconut and cashew along with kokum. Large coastlines with suitable climatic conditions help the agro and horticulture products in the district. The rich biodiversity in the region is ideal for organic farming too. The other sectors flourishing here include Aromatic and Herbal Processing Industry, Tile, Coir, Engineering and Construction along with Fisheries.

Infrastructure & Resources

Land

The forest cover in the region is a whopping 75.65%. It has 6.62% of land remaining along with 7.31% of uncultivable land, and about 10.41% is used for agriculture.

Water

Uttara Kannada has major rivers like Kali, Gangavali, Aghanashini, Sharavathi, Venkatapura and Varadha flowing in the district. These rivers aid in irrigating 16% of the net sown area in the region.

Power

HESCOM or Hubballi (Hubli) Electricity Supply Company Limited is in charge of power transmission to the district of Uttara Kannada. The power generation is widely distributed across major projects including the hydroelectric power project across river Sharavati.

Natural Resources

The district has natural deposits of silica sand, quartz, lime shell, building stone and clay.

Human Resources

Anjuman Institute of Technology and Management, Bhatkal, and Government College of Engineering are some of the premier institutes here.

Connectivity

Three international airports and two domestic airports can be accessed from Uttara Kannada. A Konkan railway route of 176 km passes through the district connecting the region to all major cities. Three national highways NH17, NH 4A and NH 206 also add to this connectivity. Ports of Goa Karwar and Mangaluru (Mangalore) offer access via sea.
