Shivamogga
The land of Jog Falls and home to the region which receives the highest rainfall in south India, Shivamogga (Shimoga) is a well-known district in Karnataka. Located at an altitude of 640 meters above sea level and situated at a distance of 273 km from Bengaluru, Shivamogga provides opportunities to invest in agriculture and food processing. Along with paddy and maize, the district also grows crops like cashew, ginger, pepper, cardamom and vanilla. The focus sectors in Shivamogga include iron and steel, paper mills, dairy units, soaps and detergents, and automobile-based units. With more than 13.000 self-employed artisans in the district, handicraft is a promising sector here.
Infrastructure & Resources
Land
Shivamogga has 32.66% forest cover in the region. It holds 24.37% of uncultivated land and 11.62% of remaining land. Land Bank Availability: 94 acres
Water
Seven major rivers - Tunga, Bhadra, Kumudwathi, Varada, Kushawati, Dandavati and Sharavathi, and nine major reservoirs including Linganamakki, Ambligola and Tunga account for the water supply to the district.
Power
Shivamogga (Shimoga) power supply transmission is done by Mangaluru (Mangalore) Electricity Supply Company Ltd. Additionally, the Sharavathi Hydro Electric Project that has ten units with an installed capacity of 1035 MW, and Linganamakki Dam Powerhouse with two units with an installed capacity of 55 MW.
Natural Resources
Natural resources in the district include limestone, manganese, china clay, building stone, laterite and alluvial soil.
Human Resources
Some of the prominent institutes in the region are Kuvempu University, Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering, Shivamogga Institute of Medical Sciences, Sharavathi Dental college and Prerana Education Society –Institute of Technology and Management.
Connectivity
Three international and two domestic airports provide excellent connectivity to the region. Shivamogga is also set to get its own airport. A railway route of 130.88 km passes through the region, and221 km of national highway and 980 km of state highway also connect the district to all the major cities. Sea route access is provided by the ports located at Mangaluru, Karwar, Goa and Chennai.
