The second most advanced district in the state, Dharwad is uniquely positioned between Bengaluru and Mumbai and is an important business centre in the state. Agriculture is a focus area in Dharwad, with floriculture, animal husbandry and the food sector driving the segment here. Along with maize and jowar, cotton, sunflower and onion are some of its major crops. Dharwad is rich in local varieties of high-quality chilly, i.e. Devanoor local and Byadagi with a major trade centre at Hubballi. Dharwad is well set with its eight industrial areas along with the existing IT/BT zone and industry-specific zone for automobile, readymade garment and food processing sectors. Water
Bennihalla of Krishna basin, Bedthi and Shalmala are the three major rivers in the district. The district is 92% rain-fed as the region is highly dependent on rainwater, irrigation facilities, tank and reservoirs along with groundwater.
Power
Dharwad power transmission is done by Hubballi (Hubli) Electricity Supply Company Limited (HESCOM). The total supply capacity to the district is 335 MVA.
Natural Resources
Building stone, clay, black cotton soil, and jelly stones are the mineral reserves present in the district.
Human Resources
Several premier institutes are located in Dharwad including Karnataka University, University of Agricultural Sciences - Dharwad, Karnataka Law University and Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) along with the Indian Institute of Technology, Dharwad.
Connectivity
Three international and two domestic airports connect the district to major cities across the country and the world. Also, national highways NH 4, NH 63 and NH 218, four state highways and 218 km of railway lines with 21 railway stations make Dharwad a well-connected district. Karwar, Mangaluru (Mangalore) and Goa ports aid connectivity across the sea.
